Baptism

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

— Matthew 28:19

At Gethsemane we believe the sacrament of Baptism is central to our life together as a congregation. As Lutherans, we believe that God’s grace comes to us as a free gift through the waters of baptism, that God cleanses us from sin, and that we become God’s unconditionally beloved children through this joyous and ancient ritual.

Whether as an infant or an adult, we trust that we are joined to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus through baptism.

Frequently Asked Questions About Baptism

Why do we baptize infants?

We believe that baptism is a free gift of God’s grace. As the earliest followers of Jesus baptized entire households (Acts 11:14; 16:15, 33; 18:8; 1 Cor. 1:16), which included infants, so do Lutherans.

Can I get baptized as an adult?

Yes!  At Gethsemane, we baptize people of all ages, from newborns to 99-year-olds+.  We invite all people to consider the sacrament of baptism, regardless of age.

If I was baptized in a different church, do I need to get baptized again?

As Lutheran Christians, we uphold ‘one baptism’ because we believe that God’s promises are good forever – no matter what we do or where life leads us. If you received a Christian baptism from any other denomination then you have received God’s promise forever!

When does the baptism take place?

Except in special circumstances, baptisms happen during our regularly scheduled Sunday worship in the midst of the gathered community.
